Part 4 - Media Influence and Society

In politics media is often used to control or change peoples thoughts. Even today. Just look at all the cheap shots Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama have thrown at each other through the media. They were all attempts to get the viewer to question their innitial thoughts and then change them. Also,Obama's good looks on television seem to have gotten him more votes from the younger voters,or so it seems. Similiar to the John F. Kennedy campaign. Also, as I said in an earlier post, being an actor can help boost your popularity and give you more exposure in the media which helped Arnold Schwarzenegger become a governor.

Final Reflection

In my research to find out what I need to do to become a better bowler ,I found out alot . As anyone who enjoys bowling knows , you need the basics , shoes ,and a ball . Shoes are pretty much easy , just make sure its for left or right handed bowlers if necessary ,most are standard. After having your shoes, you need to learn your approach , a standard four steps is used by most people . Besides the approah you need to concentrate on keeping your wrist locked, A nice back swing following thru crossing your mark on the alley. To a novice , this could be confusing , but not to a seasoned bowler .

The actual research leads me to ball types , and lane conditions . Their are four types of balls , each with its own special traits . balls come in various pounds ranging from eight to sixteen . Plastic balls are the cheapest, they have strait trajectory, a good beginner ball or spare ball. Urethane , this ball hooks more , its good for bowler learning to throw a hook . Reactire Resin, its tackier than urethane so it's hook potential increases . this ball does skid on oil, it has a stronger hooking ability on dry boards , a bigger reaction for striking power. this typeis used by most experienced bowlers on most lane contitions .Particle is the last type , a power full reactive resin . It has particles of ceramics, glass and resin to give more grip on oil for a smooth , controlled hook. This type is only good on oily lanes.

There are five different types of oil patterns that are used .The hardest to bowl on is the Scorpion , it's an unpredidictable pattern ,it demands a direct line to the pocket pro's even struggle on it .Viper ,players must attack from angles to soore . Scoring is medium to high on this pattern . Cheetah , a medium to high scoring pattern , best chance is to play near the gutter , this doesn't leave room for error . Shark ,the longest pattern, it forces bowlers to play inside the center of the lane .High scoresresult from this pattern . Finally , Charmeleon ,bowlers must be versitile to score well . Oil is placsd in strips so bowlers have to play in certain zones to soone well.

The final thing to improving my bowling would be to pick up spares . It takes plenty of practice to learn where to throw the ball to conuert a spare . A single pin spare, a ten pin spare , the chop , and sleepers , the bucket , clothesline , all names of second ball atempts . Of course you need to aeroid throwing a split , the baly split , the large splits 4-6-7-10 or the worst the 7-10 , thats a 1000 to 1 odds for a pro.

Final reflection

One day I was walking to my class and when we all got into the room. Then Mr. malley was like hey kids I have a new project for us to do.Mr.malley said the project was about something that we are really into and that's when it came to my head hey I'm really into aliens and UFO I should do it on that. So my questions was do aliens and UFO really exist. The thing about my question is I don't really no if there really is UFO or aliens out there but from the research I did it will get you thinging if there really something out besides us.

I started my research by going to Google and looking up UFO evidence.com and on this web site I seen many photographs of many different aliens that people took during the world war1 and world war2. I been watching video on ufo and aliens on you tube.com . I was watcing this video and this man said he has been abducted by aliens and when they abducted him that he lose time and that he was olny gone for 15Min's but it seem like 3 hours. He also said that when the aliens come here they dont come here to hurt us just to see how were doing and hows life is on earth.Researchers that study UFO from around the united states say there been over 250 UFO crashes seen. Researchers all so say that in buffalo lake Eire is a hot spot for UFO sighting. In the past four days my teacher Mr.Malley told me to go to this wed site called x-files released to the public.com. On this wed site it said ever seance the first sighting of a UFO the government has not released any files. They say over the next three to four years 160 files will be handed over to the national archires. the first group of eight files, one of which is more than 450 pages long, is available today.

After doing this research I got to no alot about UFO and aliens that I didn't no before.I didn't have an answer for my essential question but I got alot of research on my project.I still belive there other thing besides us in this world I all was say if god can make the big bang theory why cant he make other life besides us.

Media Influence on Society - Part 3

DOES THIS LOOK FAMILIAR!?I see a picture similiar to this almost everyday. When my younger brother comes home, most days, he does his homework and then either watches t.v. or goes directly to the neighbors house to play video games. He'll probably grow out of this habit but I DEFINITELY know that there are better, more healthier things to to do than sitting in front of the t.v. and playing video games all of the time Not to the to say that video games are bad, but too much of them probably isn't good either. Studies show a strong link between childhood obesity and video games. Media also has an influence on other types of bad and/or risky health behaviors like underage smoking, underage drinking, eating disorders, suicide, sexual intercourse, and weapon use. Not all people are this deeply influenced by media though.

I still think the government keeping thing from us and dont want us to ind out because I bet the government thinks the world would go crazy if we found these thing out. Im going to do more research to find out a little more about area 51 and why its there and whats the point of it.

Media Influence on Society 2

In my last post I didn't give the meaning of media so I will do that now. When most people think of media they tend to think about t.v., the news or radio but media can be any type of communication as long as it reaches a mass of people. Cd's, dvd's, and computers also are considered media because many people around the globe use these types of communication. To further progress my studies I decided to look for statistics. I found a website that gives statistics on how scientists think that children are being effected by media. Statistics show that children are affected by violence in media at any age, but young children are most vulnerable to the effects of violence in media because:
1) They are more easily impressionable.
2) They have a harder time distinguishing between fantasy and reality.
3) They can not easily discern motives for violence.
4) They learn by observing and imitating.

Studies also show that young children who see media violence have a greater chance of exhibiting violent and aggressive behavior later in life, than children who have not seen violent media. I personally found these facts somewhat disturbing, considering all the violence that exists in today's t.v. shows and video games. I'm no stranger to violent media myself though. I was playing Grand Theft Auto at the age of 12! The game definitelty was fun and relieved alot of stress for me but it sends the wrong messages. I never took it too seriously but other kids who happen to grab hold of an older siblings games might.

Media Influence On Society - Part 1

My inquiry started a few months back when I was watching an old Sprite commercial. I think the idea was to overload the person watching with so many messages that they couldn't conciusly follow them all at once. It seemed to have worked on me because an hour after watching it I went to the corner store to buy something to drink for my family but when I got there I had no idea what to buy. I stood in the store undecisive for a minute and then I just grabbed a drink, payed for it, and then left. But when I got home and took it out of the bag I noticed that I grabbed a two liter Sprite without even realizing it! I think that since I was a little confused and undecisive about what to buy I unconciously went for the easiest answer, a Sprite. Sort of subliminal but still media influence.

The media does this to society all of the time but not always in the way I described. Some examples being in television commercials, where most alcoholic drinks are being drank on an island by people who don't even look the legal age, and on the radio, when you here an ad or jingle so many times it becomes engrained in your memory.Media has an influence on pretty much everything we think and do. Even in justice, before public trials are even televised people tend to form their opinions before they even know the verdict, which was the case in the Micheal Jackson trial. Therefore, even if someone is proven innocent their career and reputation will still be destroyed. The way we speak can be manipulated too. One example is when you hear a certain phrase in a movie and begin to repeat it in your normal conversations.

Music videos also do this. The other day I was talking to a friend and noticed that he was beginning to sound a little like he was from The Diplomats or Cash Money records or something. Everything he said ended with "ya' dig" which he never said before. He would say stuff like "Let's go to the store, ya' dig.","I'm going to the bathroom, ya' dig", or "I'm about to make a sandwich, ya' dig." I wanted to call him a poser but since it wasn't nice I decided not to say anything at all. Maybe all the videos and songs he watches and listens too had an effect he wasn't aware of. Or maybe he's just trying to be cool. I don't know for sure. I'll have to do more research to find out.

Bowling

First I'd like to find out what bowling balls hook more and on want kind of oil patterns. I went to Google.com and then I found BowlersParadise.com. I found the four types of bowling balls and how they hook on different oil patterns. The four types of bowling balls are Plastic, Urethane, Reactive Resin, and Particle.

The next thing I'd like to find out about bowling is what are the different types of oil patterns. Then how far does the oil patterns go down the lane. I went to Google.com i find the 5 differnt oil patterns in bowling on joplingiobe.com. The oil patterns are Scorpion, Viper, Cheetah, Shark, Chameleon.

This thing that I found go along with my question. How can I improve my bowling game to became a 200 average bowler.? That is what I will need to know about boling so i can improve my bowling game.

I had to think about it at first then I was like yea I do belive in aliens why. He said because I been watching these videos about them and Its crazy you should watch them I said ok i will. I watch the videos and the man in the video said he has been abducted by aliens and that the aliens are very nice and they dont come here to hurt us. After watching the video it made me me very intrested in ufo and aliens. Before I started to talk to my friend steve about aliens I allways new there was a "area 51" but I never new why it was there. There must be reson for area 51 to be there but who konws why its there. I new there was a ufo crashing at roswell in 1947 but thats all I really no so far I want to no more about it. I would like to no if aliens out there and if so why do they come to earth. What is there point of coming here to take people and abducted them.

inquiry topic

My inquiry topic is about media influence on people's beliefs. I thought that it was interesting how you can have your mind dead-set on one belief but then suddenly de-bunk that belief because of media influence. People should do what they like instead of doing or believing what the media tells them without questioning it.

blog response 1 -conflict

ive gotten pretty far in the novel "Missing Person" and now what im mostly looking forward to find out is if the main character Carrie ever finds her lost mother. I think later in the story her soccer games are going to clash with her searching for her mother and make it hard for her to continue searching. I think Carrie may become grumpy and stressed out later in the story though because of her tendency to panic easily, especially before soccer games.

blog response 3 - symbolism

I like the colors that the author chose for the cover. She chose blue for the main color. i thought she chose a nice tone of blue. I thought the design for the cover was very generic though. On the front cover there was a picture of a young woman with a shocked look on her face and next to it was a smaller picture of a mother and her younger daughter. I thought it was just a little cheesy and predictable since the title of the book is called "Missing Person", but it still got the job done anywaywhich was to sell the book.

blog response 4 - conflict

I personally think that the intro of the book im reading sucks. I think the author of "Missing Person", Sally Pfoutz, could of done a better job with the hook. When i first started reading it i wasnt hooked at all, i had to force myself to read the book(or i might have just been sleepy). But later in the story it became interesting because things that i could relate started popping up. One example being the main character Carrie is on a sports team, which i used to be, and has lost her mother, which i could relate to too. I think that if an author really wants to pull an audience in all they really have to do is say something that they can relate to.
Did the actions of the characters seem plausible? Why? Why not?

Janie, after hearing her parents explation of her being their granddaughter has a lot on her mind. She can't sleep. Lack of appitite , more dreams. She wakes up and instead of going to school, skips school with Reeve. They take a road trip to New Jersey. The place she may have been kidnapped from. She locks in a phone book and finds an address for the family who's missing their daughter. As she gets to the address, school bussses are dropping off kids. She sees a set of twins, with hair the same red as hers! Another older boy withe the same hair gets off another bus. She's over come withe memories.I think under the cir cumtances her actions are right on the money

The Face on the Milk Carton, by Caroline B. Cooney pg. 87 -117

Do the characters read the way you think you would in a similar situation ? Do you find their actions troubling? Are their actions consistent with their characters? If not, perhaps ask yourself if it is resonable for anyone to be expected to act consistently in character?

Janie is barely sixteen . A normal sixteen year old worries about boys, driving ,their friends, proms the usual. Janie has a whole new issue. Since finding the milk carton with the the polka dot dress, she has memories, day mares as she calls them. So much stress its more than a child can handle. Was I really Kid napped? Way am I remembering things? people? Who really are my parents? She talks with her best friend. Her parents have answers but everything still doesn't add up. She feels so strange in her own life.

The Face on the Milk Carton, Caroline B. Cooney pg. 47-87

As you read today, what surprised you? Explain how it changed you thinking about the stay

Janie's parents are confronted by her about a trunk she found in the attic .It contained school papers by a Hannah . Who's Hannah? Their answer for her is that Hannah was their daughter , making Janie their grand daughter . They tell a story , an emotional story . A story of how their sixteen year old got mixed up with the wrong people . A cult, hare Krishna . She joins the cult, disappears for years and shows up one day with a little girl. She wanted a better life for her daughter . The more Janie thinks about it, the more it don't make sense . Now her parents are looking guilty.

blog response 5 - character

In the book im reading, "Missing Person" by Sally Pfoutz, I seem to be pulled by the main character Carrie who is trying to solve mystery of her mothers dissapearence . In the story she runs around frantically looking for her mother everywhere. To her though, it seems as if no one really cares. I can relate to this because my mother is in a similiar predicament. That is why i undrertand why she feels that no one cares. I think that sice everyone around is not enthusiastic as her about finding her mother she feels that they dont care.

my point of view

Mr.Stanley Yelnats was given a choice its was go to jail or he may go to camp green lake because stanley stole a pair of sneakers. The sneakers were clyde livingston a famous baseball player. The sneakers were for raiseing money for the homeless shelter.I think stanley did the right thing by going to the camp green lake then go to jail because I think stanley didnt do that bad of a thing to end up in jail.I think stanley wouldnt last 3 days in jail hes way to young and every one would mess with him if he would of went.
Do you think stanley made a good choice by picking camp green lake and not jail.

The Face On The Milk Carton, Caroline B. Cooney, page 1-46
Janie Johnson, a boring name. That's what Janie used to think about her name.a boring name, she tried changing it to up make it more interesting. As a usual boring day in school, Janie, lactose intolerant, couldn't drink milk .While eating her peanut butter sandwich she felt like one little sip . she picks up a milk carton belonging to her best friend, only to half a surprise . It was her face starring back at her off a milk carton. So now the name Jennie Spring, starts to set off memories, familiar yet strange. Was I kidnapped at the age of three. Are may parents, really my parents.

Group Blog Response

At first our group couldnt really decide on a genre. But after fighting for a little bit we decided to settle with mystery because it felt like a good topic. We think that people are drawn to mystery because of all the great mystery stories they read growing up. One example being "The Tell-Tale Heart" by Edgar Allan Poe. We believe that when people read mysteries ( just like with any genre) they allow themselves to escape reality for a little bit. The only thing different about mystery is that for a moment you become a detective and get the oppurtunity to solve a puzzling story as if it were your own.

William - 5/5 Responses
William, I'm glad you completed all of the assignments.  Now we need to work on improving the development of your responses.  You make good points, but you've got to support it with evidence and commentary.  Share your thoughts.

Cory - 2/5 Responses
Cory, I like the first sentence of your 2nd response.  You've got to go deeper.  How does the conflict affect the character?  Do you know anyone who has been through similar conflicts?  What does it say about human beings that these conflicts crop up?

Anthony - 1/5 Responses
Anthony, that was a pretty good response.  You see the problem though.  One response.  Your effort needs to improve.  Lollygag time is over.
